چکیده

Vocal recognition is widespread in the animal kingdom, and a necessary tool for offspring survival some groups. Temporal patterns of vocalisations can facilitate communication convey information such as identity, emotional state, or motivation caller. While pinniped (i.e., walrus, eared true seals) are generally well studied, captive pinnipeds show strong timing abilities, little known about temporal structure their calls wild. Here, we followed Cape fur seals (Arctocephalus pusillus pusillus) during spontaneous search efforts at Cross Seal Reserve Namibia. To investigate rhythmic patterning seal attraction calls, analysed call bouts 80 mothers 148 pups. We assessed relative vocal undertaken by pups calculating calling rates, inter-call intervals (periods silence between vocalisations), total time spent per bout. explore visualised plotting events frequency histograms inter-onset-intervals each two consecutive A normalized Pairwise Variability Index was calculated individual to underlying compared Pups produced more search, vocalised higher took shorter breaks than females. Even though female were much longer, there no significant difference females vocalising All animals seemingly random intervals, with distinguishable pattern, suggesting that these do not encode identity mother-pup reunions. However, numerical analysis showed potential asynchronous within age classes, possibly used anti-masking. Our results indicate invest energy differently while effort comparable, reunions seem be driven mostly young.

blubber of Cape fur seals Arctocephalus pusillus pusillus off the Eastern Cape coast of South Africa

The concentration of heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Pb, Ni and Zn) and organochlorine contaminants (PCBs, DDT, DDE and DDD) in the blubber of 12 adult male Cape fur seals, Arctocephalus pusillus pusillus, inadvertently caught in trawl nets off the Eastern Cape coast of South Africa during commercial fishing operations between May 1993 and October 1994, was investigated. The median and range of concentra...

Brightness discrimination in the South African fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus)

Underwater, the contrast between object and background is much larger reduced with increasing distance between object and observer than in air. For marine predators, such as pinnipeds, it would therefore be advantageous to possess a high sensitivity for brightness differences, since this would increase the distance at which prey can be detected visually. Few studies have examined the brightness...

The endocrine pancreas of the Cape fur seal, Arctocephalus pusillus (Schreber, 1776): an immunocytochemical study.

The indirect peroxidase method was employed to study the endocrine pancreas of the Cape fur seal. Immunoreactivity to insulin was confined to the cores of the islets and the insulin cells were more abundant than the other endocrine cell types, which occurred mainly in the mantles of the islets. Of these, glucagon cells were the most numerous, followed by somatostatin and pancreatic polypeptide ...

Gross and microscopic visceral anatomy of the male Cape fur seal, Arctocephalus pusillus pusillus (Pinnipedia: Otariidae), with reference to organ size and growth.

The gross and microscopic anatomy of the Cape fur seal heart, lung, liver, spleen, stomach, intestine and kidneys (n = 31 seals) is described. Absolute and relative size of organs from 30 male seals are presented, with histological examination conducted on 7 animals. The relationship between log body weight, log organ weight and age was investigated using linear regression. Twenty five animals ...
